Fishing & Cruising with the Thompsons

Fishing & Cruising with the Thompsons

Over the last few months, I  have been lucky enough to have a couple of weeks off to travel, go fishing and recharge the batteries.

Rainbow Beach Fishing Competition

I took part in the Rainbow Beach Annual Fishing Competition for the 14th time; this year was a little more relaxed with the boat staying at home. Beach fishing and kayak fishing up the creeks, Tin Can Bay and out the front of Rainbow Beach in the ocean were on the cards.

Competition was widely varied and lots of species of fish were caught; the highlight was my fishing buddy catching a 1.5m marlin on the kayak off the beach at Rainbow Beach. He was towed around for about 30mins, only to lose it beside his kayak while trying to take a photo with his phone! Needless to say, he now owns a gopro and is waiting for the next opportunity to catch another!

After lots of discussions and youtube videos with the kids, our family decided unanimously to cruise the deep blue seas for a seven nights to Vanuatu with shore trips to Noumea, Mare and Port Villa.

The shore trips included trolling through local markets, sightseeing, beachside fun and a couple of snorkelling trips. The on-board entertainment was excellent and the twice daily bingo was a heap of fun – even if we didn’t win – but thanks to Mark Moffat for the tip!

Overall, what can, I say about cruising; well, we are converts and we are already planning our next voyage. Oh, and who invented the kids club on cruise liners? What a genius!
